Madeline Bass is an Atlanta-based interdisciplinary artist whose work utilizes rope, netting, casting, and photography to explore themes of duality, precision, and apprehension. Her work challenges perceptions of reality and interpretations of the world. Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, Madeline grew up surrounded by a family of creatives that encouraged and challenged her artistic inclinations. She holds a BFA from Georgia State University and has recently exhibited her work at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I often encounter instances in my life characterized by extremes. Seasons, pivotal moments, and even the happenings of a single day contain highs and lows. I experience a blend of stress and composure as these forces coexist and shape my journey. Rather than seeking balance, I embrace these tensions and reflect them into my work. I incorporate flexible materials like jute, bed sheets, and cloth with rigid materials like wire, hydro-stone, and plaster. I explore the tactile sensations of my emotional and mental extremes through the combination of natural and manufactured materials. My methods of working mirror these contrasts — employing both systematic and random processes.
In my pursuit of creativity and security in my practice, I uncover aspects of my identity through my negotiation with materials — aiming to control them while accepting their inherent nature. Through this exploration, I dive into the interplay between perception and distortion. Ultimately my work navigates the boundaries between reality and illusion, prompting me to question and redefine these limits.
